چکیده

In this paper, we present a novel energy compaction method, called the selective block-wise reordering, which is used with SPIHT (SBR-SPIHT) coding for low rate video coding to enhance the coding efficiency for motion-compensated residuals. In the proposed coding system, the motion estimation and motion compensation schemes of H.263 are used to reduce the temporal redundancy. The residuals are then wavelet transformed. The block-mapping reorganization utilizes the wavelet zerotree relationship that jointly presents the wavelet coefficients from the lowest subband to high frequency subbands at the same spatial location, and allocates each wavelet tree with all descendents to form a wavelet block. The selective multi-layer block-wise reordering technique is then applied to those wavelet blocks that have energy higher than a threshold to enhance the energy compaction by rearranging the significant pixels in a block to the upper left corner based on the magnitude of energy. An improved SPIHT coding is then applied to each wavelet block, either re-ordered or not. The high energy compaction resulting from the block reordering can reduce the number of redundant bits in the sorting pass and improve the quantization efficiency in the refinement pass of SPIHT coding. Simulation results demonstrate that SBR-SPIHT outperforms H.263 by 1.28–0.69 dB on average for various video sequences at very low bit-rates, ranging from 48 to 10 kbps. key words: block-wise reordering, energy compaction, H.263, SPIHT, wavelet video coding

Low Rate Video Coding with Block Reordering in Wavelet Domain

In this paper, we present a novel energy compaction method, the selective block reordering, which is used with SPIHT (SBR-SPIHT) coding for low rate video coding to enhance the coding efficiency for motion-compensated residuals. The inter-frame coding basically includes three major parts motion estimation, motion compensation, and motion-compensated residual coding. The motion estimation and ov...

Motion compensation of wavelet coefficients for very low bit rate video coding

We construct a new algorithm for motion compensation of wavelet coefficients. The new approach outperforms standard block matching techniques both in terms of higher PSNR, and better perceptual quality. The algorithm works directly in the wavelet coefficients domain and has been successfully used for wavelet based very low bit rate video coding.

Highly scalable wavelet-based video codec for very low bit-rate environment

In this paper, we introduce a highly scalable video compression system for very low bit-rate videoconferencing and telephony applications around 10–30 Kbits/s. The video codec first performs a motion-compensated three-dimensional (3-D) wavelet (packet) decomposition of a group of video frames, and then encodes the important wavelet coefficients using a new data structure called tri-zerotrees (T...

Very Low Bit-Rate Video Coding by Combining H.264/AVC Standard and 2-D Discrete Wavelet Transform

In this paper, we propose a new method for very low bit-rate video coding that combines H.264/AVC standard and two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform. In this method, first a two dimensional wavelet transform is applied on each video frame independently to extract the low frequency components for each frame and then the low frequency parts of all frames are coded using H.264/AVC codec. On t...

Very low bit-rate video coding using wavelet-based techniques

In this paper, we propose a very low bit rate video coding scheme based on a discrete wavelet transform (DWT), block-matching motion estimation (BME) and overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC). Our approach reveals that the coding process works more eeciently if the quan-tized wavelet coeecients will be pre-processed by a mechanism exploiting the redundancies in the wavelet subband structu...
